The chickenpox virus causes a runny nose and a slight lever, followed by a rash of small, very itchy blisters. Scratching the blisters can lead to permanent scarring or to secondary bacterial infections of the blister.
After a person has been infected, the chickenpox virus can remain inactive in the nerve cells of their body for many years. Twenty, thirty or more years later, the virus can become active again, causing shingles - very painful rash that can last for weeks, shows what the blisters of chickenpox and the rash from shingles look like.
Routine immunisation against chickenpox did not start until 2006, so infections still occur. However, the number of infections should decline as more and more children are immunised.
